While you may have been watching Forces athletes Lamin Dean and Nick Gleeson competing in Team GB’s 4-man bobsleigh in last month’s Winter Olympics in PyeongChang…the Army Ice Championships were taking place in Winterberg, Germany, featuring Skeleton, Luge and Bobsleigh disciplines.
Chair of Army Bobsleigh, Major Gillian Cooke, emphasised the importance of winter sports in the Forces:
“Winter sports are dangerous, they are adrenaline sports, but that’s why we do these activities. Sports such as these assist in our military roles and personal development because we push ourselves out of our comfort zones into areas where we are less comfortable.”
The Winter Paralympics kicked off on March 8th and military competitors include Scott Meenagh: Para-Nordic Skiing, Jennifer Kehoe: Ski guide and Owen Pick: Para-Snowboarding are currently pushing themselves to be the best. Fantastic to hear that Jenifer Kehoe and her vision impaired athlete Menna Fitzpatrick have just won a bronze medal in the women’s Super G!
Team Army helps to support eight Army winter sport disciplines and the AFPST, which aids the recovery and rehabilitation of wounded, injured and sick service personnel and veterans through performance snowsports.
