As part of the South London Partnership InnOvaTe Project, at Bayline we’ve been helping Sutton council understand parking patterns in Beddington Park throughout the year. The park is popular both for local residents and visitors but at weekends and in school holidays the single track road to the main car park can get very congested, frustrating other visitors as well as those living nearby.
We installed an array of 161 IoT occupancy sensors across 5 zones in the park and are pleased to report 99.9% network reliability over the six months we’ve been live. A common frustration when setting up the sensor network is the time it takes for permissions to install the central base station hardware that receives data feeds from all sensors and uploads data reliably to the cloud. Landlords and other freeholders have legitimate questions about access and insurance when we look to install our box of tricks on their roof.
For this use case, we’ve avoided these delays and rolled out a successful system based on our base station hardware secured and powered through a single lighting post within the park.
It came through the storms of February this year unscathed and with no loss in performance, and with a revised high power uplink has successfully avoided any interference from the high tree canopy cover in the local area.
Since going live, we’ve rolled out a number of enhancements to make the dashboard and associated data analyser tool more powerful. So alongside a live map of parking availability, we can view occupancy for any time period for any region within the park and either overlay as a graph or extract the data for further analysis.

So with a successful trial and a wealth of data flowing, we’re now working on connecting the analytics and reporting functions to other datasets so we can better understand what influences parking availability and changes in visitor behaviour.
